October 8th PTA meeting Minutes

Greeting/Announcements from the President

·         Next month hoping to have Jen smith come to talk about science fair prior to meeting at 6PM.

·         We have a new PVA performance plus/field trip position, Lottie Porch  

·         Please make sure you are keeping track of your volunteer hours

Principals report
·         Thank you to Bates staff attending meeting: Ms. Shea, Ms. Beller, Mr. Dunn, Ms. Hutchinson
·         Thank you to all of the Parent Volunteers
·         Recently held a successful Picture day
·         Our first Spirit Day—“Professional Attire day” was a big hit
·         Students watched a Bully presentation at Maryland Hall
·         First Coffee with the Principal was held
·         This Wednesday is a 2 hr early dismissa
·         Tomorrow 8th graders are going on a field trip to CatSouth
·         The Mids have started volunteering in the school. Hats off to Mr. Burt for arranging their transportation.  We get the most Mids of any school in area.   The Mids provide both Academic help as well as character and leadership mentors.
·         Bates is well represented in the All County Dance Team. 18 dancers in the county; 6 of which are bates!!
·         On October 25th a  Swedish delegation coming to visit bates.   To see our Social Studies program including Project citizens, Model UN, Black Saga.
·         Ms Brino received an Art Educator Award.  She is also taking leadership in arts integration in the building. 
·         The Gym bleachers are installed!  Estimate fits 280 to 300 kids per side of gym.
·         Our first Quarterly showcase this year will be on Nov 15. You are invited to have Lunch with your student, walk thru art gallery and during encore time kids will go to gymnasium to watch a performance  of arts integration or regular performance.   Parents are invited to attend lunch and performances
·         The Annapolis cluster is holding event.  Many kids will be performing.  ON Friday, Oct 26 at 5:30

Treasurer report
The budget was updated budget to meet PTA advisement regarding budget procedures.  A Budget amendment was proposed regarding chess club.  Membership voted and agreed.

Other Announcements

·         AHS PTSA will hold a showing of the Race to nowhere movie -- documentary regarding stress students experience.   A Screening panel will discuss stress and work facing our kids.  Friday, Nov 30. The event will be a fundraiser. $10 in advance or $15 at door

·         Grant applications. Dance liberal arts are looking at grants for polar express performance.  Will need funding for new costumes

·         You can buy nutcracker tickets online.   There will be 2 performances.  The tickets cost $8 for orchestra and $5 for balcony.  Due to firecode regulations, everyone needs a ticket including babies.

·         The liberal Arts performance of the Polar Express will be in January.

·         The Wellness committee is working on October event

·         The Talent show will take place in the end of February.  Need a parent rep.
