Boating Program Info + Boatyard Fundraiser recap

Wanted to add an "editor's note" to the following email from Lorie Stout on the Boating program that starts TOMORROW (and yes, there are few spots left, so it's not too late to join!).  The Boatyard Bash was a huge success and one we hope will become an annual event that we all look forward to.  Thanks so much to WRNR's Alex Cortwright for emceeing, the Boatyard for hosting as well as donating prizes, the band and a percentage, Ginger Vance for organizing, and for all who came out to have a fun night out for a good cause.  We exceeded the fundraising goal (largely because the 50/50 winner, the Applegates, donated back their winnings!), so we will have a nice "nest egg" build the budget for a M/W program next year that can accommodate PVA schedules.  Special thanks also to prize donors such West Marine, APS, Art Things, Snapper Rock, Zachary's, Casa Nova, Maria's Picture Place, Annapolis Kayak & Canoe, Timex and many more!

Hi, Bates Boaters -

Tomorrow we start the Boating at Bates program after school.  In preparation for the program we will have an orientation day tomorrow from 3-4:30.  The students will be given the Boater Education course book, we will walk to the Amos Garrett Dock which is where our water access is.  Life jackets will be sized and we will discuss the fun journey's that we will be taking for the next 8 weeks.

On Thursday all or some of the students will be going on the water.  We will discuss the proper clothing that they will want on Tuesday, but be prepared that they will want some dry warm clothes each day we go on the water.

There is still some room in the class, I believe 5-6 positions.  If your student has a friend who hasn't signed up and wants to, have them contact me:  Lorie@StoutGear.com

This is the class roster right now.

Boating at Bates + Marine Industry Career Fair

Lorie Stout, Exec Director of Annapolis Community Boating (ACB), has approached us to run a Boating Course at Bates in April/May 2012 after school on Tu/Thurs.  It it will be an 8-wk/16 session course that will teach boating, environmental stewardship, and have a maritime industry component.   The kids will take the DNR's Boating License test at the end of the course.  Her programs have been developed in conjunction with the Coast Guard and DNR.  Dr. Bragdon is supportive of this program.

There will be fundraising required to bring this program to Bates.  Lorie will write grant proposals to help fund the program (grants mentioned were AYC & EYC Foundations and the 4 Rivers Foundation).  The cost covers insurance, materials, certified personnel and boat maintenance.

Because of the time commitment, for now, PVA students will not be eligible.  As she hopes to grow/build the program, next year we may be able to offer Mon/Wed sessions for PVA kids.  They also run free summer programs and are running a similar course thru the Stanton Center that may be open to PVA kids.

I desperately need a strong volunteer(s) to spearhead this initiative from the Bates end.  It would involve some fundraising as well as providing the coordination / championing at Bates.  If this volunteer spot matches your skills or interest, or if you have any resources you can offer, please contact me ASAP!  This would be a fantastic legacy you could leave to Bates.

Marine & Maritime Career Fair

On a related topic, the first Marine & Maritime Career Fair will be held at Annapolis High School for grades 8-12 on Feb 26, hosted by AACPS, Nat'l Sailing Center and the EYC Foundation.  There will be60 representative from industry as well as maritime educators (USNA, Coast Guard, and the Webb Institute).  For more info, click here.

PTA Meeting Monday Night + Pre-meeting session on AHS

I hope you all will try to attend the PTA meeting this Monday night at 6:40.  We have lots of projects to kick off for the second half including the Spaghetti Dinner, The 3rd Annual Bates 5K, and a few new projects.

Also, at 6:00, AHS Principal Don Lilley will speak to us about all the good things going on at AHS, including all the various programs and pathways - AP, IB, IB Certificates, PVA, Signatures, Music Programs, etc.  We know that for many 8th grade parents, they will need to make decisions relatively quickly regarding magnets, so we thought it would be good to know some of the options that AHS has to offer.

NOTE:  This presentation is NOT to be a forum re: the Honors For All program underway for 9th grade Science and Social Studies - that forum will be next Wednesday, Jan 11th from 6:30-8pm at AHS.  I do encourage parents who want to know more about Honor For All to attend that meeting.

Bates Art Exhibit at Quiet Waters

Check out some Bates talent this weekend!

The Quiet Waters Art Exhibition reception this Sunday Jan. 8th from 2-4 in the Willow Gallery.  There will be  art, music,  hot chocolate, a view of the ice-skating rink and a cozy fireplace.

Please contact Ms. Orzech if you have any questions.

This Week at Bates

Oddly, this week we need to start with what is NOT happening at Bates this week:

* NO monthly PTA Meeting and
* NO PVA Plus Sessions (Tu/Th Plus resume Jan 3rd, Session 3)

What IS happening at Bates this week:

* Tues, 7pm:   Liberal Arts Band, Strings, and Chorus plus Jazz Band Winter Concert @ Bates
* Wed, 5:30pm:    8th Grade PVA Capstone Performance @ Bates (Description below)
* Thurs, 6:45 & 7:30pm:    PVA Chorus performing for Midnight Madness @ State House Inn
* Fri:  Interims come home

Capstone Performance:  This is a brand new collaborative project that a select 20 students (8th grade PVA) put together over the past short 12 weeks. The performance combines music, art and dance into a unique performance telling the story of how the arts bring creativity back into a persons life. I'm very excited (and nervous!) for their performance and their hard work. The performance is early (5:30pm) so feel free to go grab dinner somewhere and then come join us for this exciting event. Please spread the word. These kids have worked very hard in writing, directing, and producing this performance. (it's free!).
Any questions feel free to ask.

Hope to see you there!

Nutcracker Performance Ticket Information

Hello Bates Family,

The Tuesday, December 20, 2011 performance of
"The Bates Nutcracker Suite" is officially SOLD OUT.
There will not be any tickets available at the door.  Due to fire laws, MD Hall does not have a standing space.  Each person, regardless of age, must have a ticket to get into the theatre for the performance.

Ticket orders have been processed and will be distributed to students to carry home this Monday, December 12th.  Mailed tickets will go out this Friday, December 9th.  If by any chance those of you who ordered tickets find that you do not need some of your tickets, please notify Kristine Genovese so she can make arrangements for others to purchase the tickets.

When you receive your ticket order next week, in your envelope you will find your tickets marked with specific seat numbers along with a marked seating chart to show you where your seat is.  There will be many ushers to assist audience members on the evening of the performance.

Our Bates Encore & PVA Dancers are looking forward to sharing a wonderful performance of "The Bates Nutcracker Suite”!

Many thanks,
Kristine Genovese

More events in December

Two more events have been brought to my attention in December.  The first is the performance of an 8th Grade "Capstone" project (a first as far as I know!) entitled "True Colors".  This is a collaborative piece staged and choreographed by 21 8th grade students across arts disciplines - music, art, and dance.

8th Grade Capstone Performance: "True Colors"
Wed. Dec 14th, 5:30 pm in Bates Gym.  Free!!

The second is a free "World Artists Experience" dance performance at South River HS on Dec 13.  More information is below:

Support Bates Dance by eating Menchies!

Support the Bates Dance Program by eating at Menchie's between Sept 29th and October 9th!  The Dance Program will be working very hard over the next several months to fund-raise for the costumes needed to outfit all 168 of its dancers.  When you see how fabulous they look on stage and how well they represent Bates, you will be happy to know that you contributed.  Please print this flyer and forward to friends and family!
