PTA Minutes, UNAPPROVED.
12.10.12

PTA President, Deirdre Ralph, welcomed parents and staff.


Stacey Herbert, Assistant Principal, gave the Principal's report
Recently at Bates, the Science Fair was held.  The students who earned the party for selling cookies had a party in the gym.  Ms. Porch will be emailing a PVA NEWSLETTER.  Reminder that our first Bates Book Club will be held on January 14.  There is an opportunity to attend the Navy Basketball Game (Flyer in the Cougar Chronicle, first of the month edition)  The Bates Bargain Basement will be held on December 20th.  Donations and Volunteers are needed.  The Nutcracker performance will be held on  Dec 20 and  21st.  Students will all attend the performance on Friday during school day.

Treasurers report
The 990 is available for viewing.  The Art sculpture (outside gate between buildings) has been paid.  Dance costumes are being purchased for the January Performance.  The Music department payment for bus and instruments has been distributed.

Proposal to amend budge to account for the money donated to the chess club.  The new budget was presented and approved.

Past events
Coffee with principal-- we have had good attendance and good discussions.   Next Coffee with the Principal will be January 25th.

Multicultural Festival will be chaired by Mr. Giddings.  It was suggested that the fair be held on April 19th to pair with 5K being held on 20th.  (Note:  Since the time of the meeting, the 5K has been moved to April 27th)

AHS PTSA showing of “The Race to Nowhere “ was well attended.  Ticket costs were able to cover the cost of movie. 125+ attended  The discussion led by the panel was very informative.  For more info contact Heather Macintosh.

Otis Spunkmeyer cookies have been sorted and distributed. 

A Staff luncheon was held during conference week.  Thank you to all the parents for their support.  Also thank you to Jeannie Bullen,  Becki Hutchinson  and Steve Conyer for your help.

The California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser generated $320

Upcoming events

Restaurant night is being planned for the Green Turtle in January or February.  Parents requested more restaurant nights.

We have some Grant applications needed.  Need a volunteer to write the grants.

Bates bargain basement is December 20th. See above

Bates Arts in Motion 5K is scheduled for April 20th (Now scheduled for April 27th). at 8 am.  We are working with Lottie Porch regarding students attending PVA Saturday that day.  We have gotten a better quality timer in order to attract more “real runners” Starting recruit volunteers. Contact Liz del Castillo to volunteer.

The Bates Family Book Club will be held following  the next PTA mtg.  It will be run by Ms. Sporre, Media Specialist.  Refreshments will be served.   Book clubs will also be held during school hours.   A lot of students are reading the book!

The Talent show will be scheduled for late April or May.

The Italian Dinner is scheduled for  Feb 22. Committee to meet in January.  Contact Deirdre if want to be on committee

Ideas for Speakers for PTA Meeting.

QPR Training (a suicide prevention model)
Internet safety/social media.
Military family issues

PVA Italian students are taking a  field trip to Bella Italia.  They are walking.   Staff is alert to the need for safety.  There will be an chaperones.


Traffic issue at corner of SPA/Greenfield.  Parent concerns regarding student safety.  Plan to write a letter to Annapolis education committee about having an officer direct traffic at Spa Road. Mary grace Gallagher will write the letter


School Wide Dance is tentatively scheduled for January 25th (Now scheduled for February 1).   The dress is Casual to formal.  The SGA is hiring a DJ.   A Spirit day will be held on Friday.   The PTA Budget includes $200 for SGA.

SGA has high participation this year.  School wide elections made a big difference in commitment level from students.

There will be a Professional attire day this Wednesday.

The Jean/Jersey day was well received.  

There will be an 8th grade trip to Gettysburg in spring. Parents recommended more time at the park. Mr. Hartman is in charge of field trip. 

The Annapolis Ed Commission, Jeff Macris, Chair, meets on the first Monday of month from 5:30 to 7pm.  Mr. Macris asked the PTA regarding their support of lobbying the county to start High School at 8 pm.  PTA attendees came to consensus that they are in support of moving High School start time and would be willing to speak up, write letters, speak at Board meetings etc.  Go to www.AACstarttime.com  to sign petition. Lisa Pline, HS PTSA President, Thanks the Bates Community for supporting the “Race to Nowhere”  She also announced that the AHS Music Winter concert will be  Wednesday  at 7 pm.  This week California Pizza Kitchen is running a fundraiser for the high school.
