5/13 Unapproved PTA Meeting Minutes

PTA meeting 5/13, unapproved minutes. (respectfully submitted, Amy Beller, PTA Secretary)

At 6 PM, Speaker Karol Bloch AHS 9th gr counselor spoke about and answered questions regarding AHS.  Very Informative.  Thank you Ms. Bloch!

Treasurers report
Liz del Castillo presented the proposed cut to cover Budget Shortfall.
Cuts include:
Extra music money (money not spent)
Math club budget (no math club)
Health room (nurse approved cuts)
Result in $1900 in cuts

The cuts were voted upon and approved.

Principals Report
Mr. DeRoo thanked the PTA for it’s support of the whirlwind weekend – including the  5k, Multicultural fair,  Dr. Bragdon Ceremony, Quarterly Arts Festival,  Basketball and Soccer games.  Mr. DeRoo stated his belief that no other school does this as well as bates!!! He also remarked on the success of the Talent Show, PBIS May Flower event, the great music field trip, Italian Embassy String Performance, and performance of Jazz band downtown on Saturday.

Looking towards end of the year, Mr. DeRoo reminded us that exams are approaching.  On June 13, there will be an 8th grade dance 6-8 PM.  8th grade Award Assembly will take place at 10 am at MD Hall, followed by reception in the gym.  This is a ticketed event due to  fire code.
We Just received an award for arts integration for $5000 more info to come (see this week’s chronicle for more information)   Schools from around the country are coming to visit  our Arts Integration Program.  There will be a Smoothie event coming up by the Wellness Committee.  The Wellness committee is also interested in sponsoring a club/activity for next year.  There has been discussion about offering French class.  A meeting is scheduled with Jen Hernandez on May 21 at 10:15 am.


Past events
Last coffee with the Principal was held Apr 26.  Nicely attended

Multicultural Fair  PTA paid for drummer and help  organize intl tasting restaurant donations (Cindy Applegate, Laura Brino, Ron Giddings). Fabulous job!  Basketball and soccer was a great addition to the festivities.

Bates Arts in motion 5k  Liz DelCastillo led a debrief discussion for event.  The PTA lost money on the event, however, the students and parents who attended had a positive experience.


Talent Show, PTA will pay for a portion of MD Hall fee.  (Maurena darling) A successful and well attended event.

PBIS May Flower Event – PTA funded dirt, flats of flowers PTA funded (Stacey Burke).  Would be helpful to have a parent volunteer to work with the teachers on this event for next year.

Kings Dominion Trip -- PTA funded in part

Staff Appreciation Garden Party Breakfast (Jeannie Bullen) This Wednesday.  A breakfast from 7 till 10.  Bring stuff tomorrow between 1:45 and 2:45.  Jeannie will be here on we'd between 6:30 and 10.  Needs coffee urn and one more volunteer.  Volunteer spot worked well.

Debbie Gill is retiring May 30.  The PTA would like to honor her at smoothie event with a gift.


Honor Roll/Pva Picnic, PTA will provide refreshments (Steve Conyer )

Ruby Tuesday Restaurant Fundraiser

California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser

Field Day PTA provides funding.  We will need watermelons and day of watermelon-cutter volunteers (Jim Griffiths)

Wellness Committee – Holding a Smoothie Event during lunch on May 30  (Heather Macintosh)   Needs volunteers and blenders.  Strawberry yogurt smoothies


8th grade dance  7th grade parents, please chapereone.  PTA is providing funds for food at the dance and award ceremony reception in gym.

Our last meeting is June 10.  Lottie Porch will be the guest speaker at 6 PM

Volunteer Recognition and Award Ceremony  Lisa Pline received an award for Outstanding Volunteer.  Amy Beller received an award for  Super Star Staff Supporter Award
