General Membership Meeting
October 14, 2013

Call to Order Pledge of Allegiance-Deirdre Ralph -President
                                Approximately 14 parents/staff in attendance
                                Introduction of PTA Executive Board

President Report:
-PTA information available on display-
-We NEED parents to sign up for eScrip, Safeway , Giant, Target School  
                   Programs. It is free money and helps support programs at school.
-PTA membership forms, Sign up sheets for committees, bumper stickers for sale,
-PTA Booklet-Important dates and information-
 Monthly PTA Meetings, & Coffee with the Principal
 Blog Website- www.Batespta.org
-Chess Club-Wednesdays during lunch, Room 215-parents pays $55.00 per semester for child to join club or scholarships are available
-THREE important dates;
 Friday, February 21st-Italian Dinner and Silent Auction for the Arts
Friday, May 2ND Multicultural Night
Saturday, May 3RD 5K Run

Treasurer Report:
-Liz Castillo reported that the Otis Spunkmyer fundraiser has brought in approximately $33,000.00, of which approximately $20,000.00 (40% profit) will be paid to Otis Spunkmyer, leaving Bates MS PTA with an approximate amount of $13,000.00.
-PTA membership is up; you can still join, and look for the invite from Yahoo groups so you can receive important emails from the PTA.
Fall Fundraisers:
-Discussed an 8th grade incentive for next years Otis Spunkmyer fund raiser
suggestions included non-uniform day, extra recess.
Principals Report:
                                -Coffee with the Principal had a good turnout.
-Discussed SRO Police Officer presence at school, funding
-Individual Student Recognition each month
-Clubs and Activities into full swing-busy place!
-Grade 6 environmental trips is being done in small groups
-National Junior Honor Society forms went home. A service project will be included this year. Next years 8th graders will already be informed and ready to start at the beginning of the year.
-Discussed dismissal traffic onto Spa Road and safety of students who walk to school. The Principal and PTA agreed to write a letter to the city asking for some assistance.
-Brief discussion of uniforms-questions, goal of uniform change was met-success, next year’s shirt colors (do shirts follow students or student’s follow shirt colors by grade)


Requests:            1.Heather Macintosh provided an update on French classes available online for a fee, eighth graders can test in for high school.
2. Heather Macintosh provided an update on the Wellness Committee. Interest was expressed in fitness clubs, “Girls on the Track” part of “Girls on the Run”, intramurals.
3. Becky Porzillo-Mids for Kids off to a great start.
4. Amy Beller reported on survey for guest speakers prior to PTA meetings. She also repeated a request for guest speakers during the Advisory period every Wednesday 10-10:40, to discuss a different Character trait each month-contact Rachel Long   Rlong@aacps.org
-Jeannie Bullen-Reported on Teacher Appreciation and dinner provided during the parent teacher conference days November.
-PBIS Committee discussion on Bates Bucks and reinforcing the earning of Bates Bucks. One idea is a rolling cart with items to buy using Bates Bucks. Need parent to volunteer to be in charge of cart. Contact: Dr. Rubinec, DRUBINIC@aacps.org
Miscellaneous:

Bliss Kaye –PTA Vice President provided an update on the Uniform Closet-Need unused/gently used uniforms especially black and/or brown belts, and large size khaki pants, unused/gently used close-toed shoes, socks.
