PTA Minutes - Nov 11 Meeting

Bates Middle School PTA
General Membership Meeting
November 11, 2013

Guest Speaker-6pm
Officer Baycorn discussed her role as a county School Resource Officer (SRO) at Bates MS
-Attended Bates MS and Annapolis High School
-25 Years as a Police Officer-started as an Annapolis City Police Officer is now a Anne Arundel County Police Officer
-Main priority is preventative and to build relationships with students and staff. --Officer Baycorn is considered part of student services team-Guidance Counselor, Social Worker, PPW
-Has an open line of communication with the City of Annapolis police department.
-The position of a school resource officer is decided by police partnership with     the Board of Education

Call to Order:
Pledge of Allegiance-Deirdre Ralph-PTA President
Introduced Kia Chandler Board of Education Citizen Advisory Committee Member-1 of 29 Members. She is assigned to Bates, Annapolis MS, and Annapolis HS-for two years
Her goal is to facilitate a two way conversation with the Board of Education and citizens/parents
Ms. Chandler emphasized letter writing and active parent involvement to let Board of Education know what parents/citizens feel is important for our schools
Meetings at Board of Education bimonthly-next meeting December 2nd
Schools can send a representative
They vote-collect data to back up topics (such as letter writing)
Topics now being discussed include:
High School start times
Board of Education looking at possible revenue from cell phone towers on school property
Technology policies with students at high schools



Heather McIntosh-Bates Parent- spoke at Citizen Advisory Committee meetings to assist in pushing back high school start times last year. She will be addressing the Board of Education again on Nov. 20th, 7pm, dress in black because the sky color is black when High School students get on the bus. If you want to testify be there at 6pm.

Treasurer Report- Liz Castillo
Ms.Orzach/Ms. Brino invited to present at a National Conference at the end of March $700.00 per person/ cost, asking PTA for $1,400.00. Suggested asking Bates community to donate airline miles to help defray cost.  Motion and vote to approve if airline miles are not donated. 
Otis Cookie Sales- about $40,000 /pay Vendor about 24,000

Upcoming Events:
-Otis Cookie Delivery-Wednesday Nov.13, need help this Wednesday, 15-20 volunteers 1-6pm,  2-2:30 Students can come get cookies to take home, parents can pick up cookies until 6pm
-Quarterly Art Showcase Events- Friday, Nov.15-Celebrating Hispanic Showcase-need food donations to volunteer contact Cindy Applegate: cindy@applesigns.com
-Staff Appreciation Lunch-Viva Italia! Monday Nov. 25 sponsored by PTA, contact Jeannie Bullen: jandcbull3@verizon.net  to volunteer food and/or time

Principals Report-Mr. DeRoo
Dec. 13th Coffee with the Principal had a good turn out
Quarterly Showcase celebrates Arts Integration -this Friday, times in Cougar Chronicle-Parents invited to events during school hours and/or evening that includes unveiling of the decorated fence, indoor soccer game
Thankful for Mids and their contribution to students and staff of Bates MS
Dancers are going to NYC
Bates enrollment is 820
Bates scheduled for renovation 2017
Requests for modular classrooms
Staff involved with “Take Bates on the Road”- Teachers go to the Stanton Center to help students with homework
All County Orchestra-Bates had the most students qualify
Honor Roll Party (Donuts)- Nov. 14, 8:30-10, 435 out of 820 students made the Honor Roll- contact Stacey Hooper, snjhoops@msn.com
Restaurant Nights-California Pizza Kitchen are the week of Dec 10-11-12.
Avid Field Trip-National College Fair Baltimore

Please continue to donate to the uniform closet-need uniforms, belts, and shoes
Escrip only using debit card at Safeway-need to sign up every year
