PVA Dance and Creative Writing,
"Pina Bausch" Inspired Performance
The Summer Garden Theatre
May 8th, 8pm, Free to the public
In
case you missed the debut performance at the Quarterly Arts Showcase, here is a
review: Students and parents alike responded with dropped jaws and cheers to
the Pina Bausch salute, in which dancers portrayed a progression from
work-a-day frustration to coffee breaks to the slow walk to retirement. In
uniform step, they marched to work; with foot-stomping frustration, they
groaned about work and with coffee-cup percussion they kicked back and when
they relaxed, literally "let their hair down," giving their
ponytails, at least, a break. Through it all, a tiny blonde, Josephine Brunner,
in a Bausch's signature red dress coolly floated through the scenes, sometimes
passed assembly-line-style through a line of workers, sometimes leading a
slow-motion scene-change and, at one point, delicately walking up the backs of
school chairs, tipping them over in her elegant charge.
